Resveratrol Review: What the Human Research Shows
Resveratrol extended life in some animal studies, yet human trials show small, inconsistent effects. We weigh the evidence, the sirtuin and NMN claims, and who should take care.
In briefChecked October 2026
Not in a way that holds up in people. Some animal studies saw longer lifespan or better metabolism with resveratrol. Human trials, which typically gave 150 to 1,000 mg a day for weeks to months, report small and inconsistent effects. One 2024 meta-analysis on metabolic syndrome found lower blood pressure but higher triglycerides, and described the results as borderline. No human study shows resveratrol slows aging.
Findings from human trials
A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis pooled resveratrol trials in people with features of metabolic syndrome. Blood pressure came down. HDL cholesterol and waist size didn't change, and triglycerides rose. The authors called the overall picture borderline. Results from other human trials have likewise been small or mixed.
Interest in resveratrol took off when lab and animal work tied it to sirtuins, proteins that play a part in metabolism and cell maintenance. Nobody has shown that it switches on SIRT1 in people. The body also breaks down oral resveratrol fast, so only a little of the original compound makes it into the blood.
Labels like to highlight "trans-resveratrol" and a high purity percentage. Purity describes what's inside the capsule. It says nothing on whether the capsule will do anything for you.
Combining resveratrol with NMN
Some marketing claims the two work better as a pair, because sirtuins need NAD+ and NMN helps the body make it. Human trials haven't tested that pairing, so any added benefit is a theory and not a result. For NMN alone, see our piece on what NMN trials show.
Who Needs to Take Care
Blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (such as warfarin, clopidogrel or aspirin): resveratrol could raise bleeding risk.
Drugs broken down by the liver enzyme CYP3A4: interactions are possible.
Estrogen-sensitive conditions, including some breast, uterine or ovarian cancers and endometriosis: resveratrol acts a little like estrogen, though weakly.
Surgery coming up: stop about two weeks beforehand.
Pregnancy or breastfeeding: avoid it. Higher doses make stomach upset more likely.
The human evidence is weak. Trials report small, inconsistent effects, and a 2024 meta-analysis called its results in metabolic syndrome borderline. No human study shows it slows aging.
It's a plant compound present in grape skins and some berries. Lab and animal studies found effects on sirtuins and metabolism, but those haven't been clearly demonstrated in people.
Human trials haven't tested the pair. If you'd like to try either one, start them separately so you can better judge what each does, if anything. Talk to your doctor if you use blood thinners.
Both are chemical forms of one molecule. Supplements usually list trans-resveratrol. A high purity figure tells you about the capsule's contents and doesn't prove any benefit.
Human trials lasted from several weeks to a few months, and effects were small and inconsistent. We can't give a dependable timeline for noticeable results.
